Yeah, what to say when someone does the "yer not fat" because they think it's some kind of awesome complement to not be fat? I almost feel sorry for people who get stripped of this ubiquitous so-called compliment (BIGGEST CULPRIT = MY MOM) but then again, they should be stopped!

Alternatives:

1. You are beautiful!
2. Thanks for writing a kick-ass blog and sharing your life with us!
3. Have I mentioned how lovely you are?

customdesigns4ubyan - I know that was probably meant as a compliment, but um... it's not. Fat is simply a descriptive term to describe my appearance in the same way that I am brunette, blue-eyed, and quite short. I don't use it as a pejorative, just a fact. According to the BMI (which is bullhonky science, but don't get me started) I am just shy of "morbidly obese" (unless of course I happen to be retaining water that day or had a big lunch, natch).

By telling me I'm not fat as a compliment you're only perpetuating the bunk idea that fat=negative, thin=positive, when really, both are morally neutral and just simple physical descriptors.
