Black-face, sugar skulls, and Pocahontas.

I just knew there was going to be lots of racist and appropriative BS at the Halloween dance party we went to (at the bar in town that is divey, but not dirty). I KNEW it. I was 100% sure of it, because nothing brings out the assholes like $1 PBR and dancing... which bums me out, since PBR and dancing are some of my favorite things.

I tried to prepare myself. I told myself to expect assy costumes, but that me being drunk and dancey was not going to be the right situation to call people on their fuckery. They wouldn’t get the point and I wasn't going to be in a clear frame of mind to make a coherent one anyway. This is the nature of going out in public EVER… witnessing fuckery. I know, I have no sense of humor and I'm just a bitter feminazi who worries too much about things and blah blah blah, but seriously... it's just common sense NOT to dress in blackface. I only started reading up on issues of race and appropriation in the last couple of years, but before being aware of some of the more nuanced acts of racism (which are often institutionalized and not intentional, though NO LESS wrong), I knew well enough not to dress up in blackface. That's an asshole move, simple as. Apparently the guy dressed up as a "southern evangelist" didn't get the memo. Neither did the slutty Pocahontas. Guh.

So hindsight being 20/20, we should have gone to the Coen Brothers themed Halloween bash at the pretentious bar. At least there was a theme that left less room for random fuckery, which maybe would have resulted in me feeling a bit less... stabby. Our costumes wouldn't have worked, but maybe next year we can plan further ahead. I changed my costume a few days before the party and Seth wasn't even going to dress up originally and decided to re-wear his Jesus costume the day of.

Gothy Unicorn serious business, Jesus loves kittens, Pirates are fancy, and Prospectors are grizzled.

So yes, people are jerks, often not even meaning to be... but a little bit of critical thinking goes a long way. And frankly, I have an AMAZING sense of humor, seriously, I just don't find racist BS humorous. So excuuuuuse me. Also, it didn't help that the "dj" wasn't very good. First off, she just made a playlist. BORING. Secondly, even Seth said he was a bit disappointed she didn't play more dubstep. Yah. So that tells you how bad it was.
