I'm griping about fat girl clothes.

Torrid, especially.

I recently felt compelled to buy a romper. I love this trend and think they're ridiculously cute and breezy when I see them on other girls. I imagined pairing mine with opaque tights, flats, an over-sized grandpa cardigan and a fringey scarf. I was ridiculously excited, anticipating it's arrival, just in time for Spring.

In the picture the fit looked fine. Sure, the model they have wearing it is a bit more hourglass shaped than me... which is why I ordered it one size up from what I normally wear. I figured that way it'd fit a little loose or atleast good enough and that the thick belt would compensate for any weirdness around the middle. Dude. Let me list all of the bizarre fit issues this garment had:

  • Even in a size up from my usual size, the middle was ridiculously tight. The belt was too large and stretchy, to boot, so when I buckled it I was on the smallest hole of four holes. Romper = too tight, belt = huge...?
  • The front zipped up, which created some weird stiffness down the middle. This also created a huge gap at the top... which was about 3 inches too low and left an obscene amount of my cleavage hanging out. Looking at the girl up there, I was under the impression it would have a tiny bit of classy cleavage, if any at all.
  • The torso was so long that if I wore it at my natural waist, the crotch of the garment hung about 4 inches BELOW where my crotch actually is. That's awkward. And because of that, the bottom of the shorts went to my KNEES. As you can see in the picture, they are not meant to be worn like gaucho pants.
  • And finally... the bust. Oh my goodness, the bust. I am not a tiny-chested person. I wear a 40D. These are some large breasts I've got. C'mon. So why... why? Why was the entire top of the romper impossibly loose and billowy? The darts sewn in to make it fit contoured to your bosoms only made it's looseness even more awkward. It was practically hanging off of me.

Basically... Torrid earns a big, giant WTF from me. I'm really thinking I won't participate in this crap-shoot again. It's just so hit and miss with them. I'll stick to ordering boots there from now on. But on a slightly cheerier note...

I ordered this dress from them on clearance almost a year ago. Their policy is that clearance items can't be returned, so when I tried it on and found it to be way too short, it ended up being thrown in the back of my closet in a huff. Is it just me, or does it hit her knees in the picture? It barely hit my mid-thigh. This morning I pulled it out to see if I could somehow alter it or something. No need. It works GREAT as a tunic-length top over leggings! I just pull the banding up to the very top of my thighs and voila! Billowy, flattering, banded bottom tunic!

From a seamstress perspective I can't think of anything more difficult to tailor than a romper. Unless it also had sleeves (in which case we're in jumpsuit territory). So I'm not surprised an RTW version might not fit many people who order it online.

I have a 2X Blue Plate dress - never been worn, tags still in. Was told by Fatshionista reviewers to go up a size for bust size and I did so, but upon receiving said item it is way, way too large. Don't know what to do with it! Have thought about putting it in for consignment. But then worried it will get snubbed by the owner because it's too fat (although she wouldn't actually say that). Damn, what to do?

I love recycled clothing: opting out of the whole sweatshop purchase. And on that note - did you read the recent article and *especially* the comments re: Plato's Closet? The comments are worth reading.

(I have had good luck with Torrid's t-shirts, that's all)

I love Fatshion talk.

Well one place I won't be ordering cloths from.

I've only ever had good luck shopping at Cato. I can get jeans that accept I have a big butt without hanging on the rest of my legs. And cute tops that look decent on me.
